About me
Dual board-certified in Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine, Dr. Benjamin Lai has served as Chair of Mayo Clinic’s Opioid Stewardship Program since 2023, following his role as Co-Chair from 2021–2022. He has led quality improvement initiatives, developed institutional opioid prescribing and monitoring guidelines, and expanded access to medications for opioid use disorder across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency department settings.
As a Population Health Scholar through Mayo Clinic’s Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Center for the Science of Healthcare Delivery, Dr. Lai has conducted population health and clinical research resulting in multiple publications and contributions to nationally funded projects. He collaborates with clinicians and investigators across Mayo Clinic and nationally.
Dr. Lai has also participated in county- and state-level committees focused on opioid stewardship and access to evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder and is a frequent speaker at national and international forums. In addition, he serves as Course Co-Director for three Mayo Clinic Continuing Medical Education programs focused on opioid best practices, stewardship, and opioid use disorder, while actively contributing to addiction and medications for opioid use disorder education for fellows, residents, medical students, and advanced practice providers.
